Vacation Day 36: Animal Kingdom/Coral Reef

This morning we went to the Animal Kingdom to knock off a few last things we wanted to do before leaving DisneyWorld on Thursday. When we woke up, it was sooooooooo COLD! How can it go from 80 degree weather to a high temp of 57 degrees today? Right now as this blog is being written, it’s currently 48 degrees outside. What the heck? We were sweating bullets for the past 24 days, then today we needed hats, mittens, blankets, jackets and the heater! It’s crazy.

Meeting Flik in the Cold at Animal Kingdom

So we froze our butts off in the Animal Kingdom. Maria took the kids to DinoLand while the adults went off to hit Everest and It’s Tough To Be A Bug. Sadly for the kids group, Triceratop Spin was broken, so they couldn’t ride any rides. The engineer who was working on the ride said that he thought it might be the cold weather making the ride act up. He said they ran a test run in the morning, and after 30 seconds the ride shut down and didn’t turn back on. D’oh! However, something nice happened while we were there. The character greeting spot had NO WAIT, so we got to meet and take pictures with Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger, all in a row, with no wait! That was great.

Andrew, Vavo and Vavu came to DinoLand after Everest. Then Vavo and Vavu went shopping while Andrew, Maria, Aiden and Jeremy had characitures drawn for Uncle Tim, who is lining his hallway with drawings of the family. Jeremy’s drawing is of him in the role of Superman. Aiden is Spiderman in his (big surprise there). Andrew and Maria are wearing mouse ears in theirs, standing in front of the Magic Kingdom.

Getting our charicatures drawn

Triceratop Spin was back up and running by the time we were done with our charicatures, so Drew took the kids on it while Maria paid for the portraits and Vavo and Vavu rode “it’s tough to be a bug”.

By the time all that was done, we had to cut out of the Animal Kingdom QUICK! It was already 11:45, and we had to get ourselves over to Epcot for our lunch reservations ASAP!

So it was back to the parking tram, back in the van, into the Epcot parking lot, back on another tram, through another security checkpoint, through the front gates, and over to “The Seas”, where we had priority seating arrangements at 12:30. We arrived at exactly 12:30 on the dot. Not a second to spare.

It took a long time to be seated at the Coral Reef, even though we had priority seaitng. It was really packed, and our reservations were right at the peak of lunch hour. But in time, we got a table, and got ready to eat. The food was pretty good. The ambiance is really what you go there for. You dine in a room where one entire wall is glass, facing a huge aquarium. There were sharks and all kinds of fish and sting rays in there.

The kids enjoyed watching the fish, but were getting tired by the end of lunch. It was 2:30 before we got out of there.

The kids took a nap after lunch, and we started our tour of the World Showcase. We made a quick shopping stop in Canada, then headed over to Japan to do some more shopping! We ran out of time, though, and had to leave early, because it was time to go to the America Pavilion to see the Voices of Liberty sing. When we got there, the kids were asleep in the stroller, and they wouldn’t let us in to see the show with them in the stroller. Boo boo! It’s just right there in the lobby/waiting area, and Maria tried to argue her case, but to no avail. Oh well. Refusing to miss the Voices of Liberty AGAIN, Maria stayed with the boys while everyone else watched the show.

Maria met up with the group back in the Japan Pavilion, where we bought our clock. We’re totally excited about it! Whenever we hear it play music, we will be reminded of our trip. Here is a link to the same clock that we bought: http://www.allabouttime.net/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AAT&Product_Code=4MH787&Category_Code=RA

We spent so much time in Japan, that by the time we were done, the kids were awake from their nap, and the Voices of Liberty were performing again in the American Pavilion. So this time we all saw them. The kids were pretty fussy for some reason- they usually like listening to live music. We had to take them on the side because they were too loud :-(

Voices of Liberty

After the performance, “An American Adventure” was showing in the theatre. This is a stage presentation with animatronics characters that tells the history of America. This was kind of boring for the kids, but they did like the animatronics, and the fake fireworks at the end.

The kids liked the fake fireworks

Outside, it was getting pretty cold. So Andrew bought us some hot chocolate, and the kids ate Christmas cookies. We caught a little peek of Kirk Cameron reading for the Candlelight Processional. It was hard to see him through the crowd, but we could really hear his voice – it’s quite distinct.

Aiden with his Christmas cookie

We took our hot chocolate, and went over to Germany, where Vavo and Vavu had some shopping to do. We tried the special German Christmas drink that we heard about from the German storyteller a few days ago – Gluhwein. It’s a hot spiced wine. Very tasty! And it warms you up.

We wanted to see the acrobats perform in the China Pavilion, because we had seen them in passing a couple of times and they were really good. So we went over to get seats for the next show. While we were waiting, Aiden got all upset because he didn’t want to sit and wait. So Maria took him to a little corner to have him sit and calm down. He just wouldn’t stop crying – and it made him choke. He barfed pink, from his Christmas cookie, all over his sweatshrit and the ground. Yay. It was time to leave.

We stopped and bought him a new sweatshirt on the way out, because it was really cold, and he couldn’t keep on the one he was wearing (yuck). We were definitely done for the day. We didn’t even want to stop for dinner. So we just called for a pizza and went home.

The kids were worn out and just needed to relax. We put on Spiderman (Aiden’s favorite), and ate pizza and just rested for the rest of the evening. Sometimes, you just have to call it quits on a day.

------------------------------------------
The best part of day 36 was getting our clock, the kids meeting hecka characters.
The worst part of day 36 was pink puke (duh).
What we learned on day 36 was Christmas must be fun in Germany (if you’re drinking Gluhwein)!
The weather on day 36 was too too cold.
Our character sightings on day 36 included Flik, Rafiki, Chip & Dale, Timon, Brother Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Snow White, Dopey.
The crowd level on day 36 was pretty yuck.

Poor Aiden! He's really gotta work on calming himself down! It's just no good to get worked up so much you barf! Eww...

O well, at least it didn't seem like there were that many crowds.
